Birkhead Mountains Wilderness Backpacking
The Birkhead Mountains Wilderness was established in 1984. The Wilderness includes 5,160 acres at the northern end of the Uwharrie Mountains in central North Carolina. These mountains are considered to be the oldest on the North American Continent. All trails within the Wilderness are designated hiking trails. Travel by horse, motorized vehicle or bicycle is prohibited. Gold panning, mineral collection and backpacking are allowed and popular with visitors. Water supplies, normally permanent, have been effected by the recent drought. I recommend carrying a minimum of 3 liters of water per person for day hikes and overnight trips. The smallest creeks are stagnant and not usable but the larger creeks are still flowing.
