California – Hiking with dogs?

I am interested in backpacking in California with my dog. I prefer the Sierra and I prefer stay away from the coast. Done anyone know the good areas where dogs are allowed in the backcountry? It would be great if someone knew rules for state parks, national forests, wilderness areas, BLM lands, etc.

In October 2008, I took my dog Ed Desolation Wilderness in Lake Tahoe. I started the trail at ECCO Lake on the Pacific Crest Trail for a quick Overnighter. Its real nice area and When I went they were very few people. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed. Here's a website with all information. This http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/ltbmu/recreation/wilderness/desowild Web site has some good photos of the area to give you a better idea of what its like. http://doors.stanford.edu/desolation/index.html Hope this helps
